History of Sekishu-an

Cherishing Our Origins
The roots of Sekishuan trace back to 1948 (Showa 23), just after the end of World War II.
In those chaotic postwar years, our founder’s mother, Itsu Takagi, who had evacuated to Ito, began selling candy door-to-door by bicycle. Around 1955 (Showa 30), the family opened a storefront and started making confections like yokan (sweet bean jelly) together.

Creating Sweets Inspired by the Land
In 1961 (Showa 36), with the full opening of the Izu Kyuko Line, tourism in the region surged.
Koichi Takagi, the founder and then a banker, was inspired by his childhood dream—“I want to contribute to Izu’s growth.” He returned to the family confectionery business.
He began developing sweets inspired by Izu and gradually expanded the customer base from the eastern coast to all of Izu, including western regions.

Founding of Sekishuan
In December 1984 (Showa 59), building on years of experience and knowledge in wagashi production, the wagashi specialty shop Sekishuan was established.
The name “Sekishuan” is derived from a proud piece of history over 400 years ago: during the major reconstruction of Edo Castle under Tokugawa Ieyasu, massive stones were quarried from the mountains of Izu and transported by thousands of boats to Edo via sea. This legacy inspired the name.

Since our founding, we have been grateful for the support of many loyal customers. Their words of praise have fueled our dedication to the craft of wagashi.Remaining true to our founding spirit, we continue to uphold traditional techniques, embrace the challenge of creating new flavors, and deliver heartfelt hospitality every day.
